My last knock

480x333-images-eduardochibas Eduardo René Chibás y Ribas was born on August 26, 1907 in Santiago de Cuba. He attended the first studies at the Jesuit College in Santiago de Cuba and the second teaching at the ''Colegio de Belén''. At the age of 17, he studied Law at the University of Havana

At the age of 18, he participated in a demonstration on December 17, 1925 to demand the release of Julio Antonio Mella. When arrested by the public force in Central Park, he confronts the uniformed men shouting "A Constitution written with the blood of Maceo and Martí must be respected!"

In 1927 he was expelled from the University of Havana due to his political activities as a member of the University Student Directory (DEU) against the extension of powers of Gerardo Machado.

In August, 1931 he was imprisoned. He manages to go into exile at the end of 1932 and returns during the fall of the Machado dictatorship in August 1933. He played an important role in the military coup of September 4, 1933 and had a significant influence on the Executive Commission and the Government of One Hundred Days. After the fall of this government, he militated for several years in the Revolutionary Left.

Eduardo René creates the radio time ''La Voz de las Antillas'', where with absolute honesty, he defends the interests of the Cuban people: the reaffirmation of our sovereignty and public and economic freedom, which will be the permanent conquests upon which the new Republic will settle; truly free, dignified and sovereign.

In 1938 he entered the Cuban Revolutionary Party (Authentic). He was a delegate to the Constituent and Representative to the Chamber in 1940.
Chibás was a fervent defender of the government of Ramón Grau San Martín during his brief progressive stage. But very soon he became his most staunch censor. In 1947 he founded the Party of the Cuban People (Orthodox), from which he brought together and mobilized the popular masses in civic struggles.

On Sunday, August 5, 1951, in front of the microphones of the CMQ radio station, while directing a speech against the dishonest policy of President Prío, Eduardo Chibás said: Cuban people, get up and go! Cuban people, wake up! This is my last knock! And then he was shot; due to the injury he died on August 16. His funeral was considered at that moment the greatest manifestation of popular mourning in the country.
