On August 22, 1922, radio broadcasts began in Cuba, reflecting the transformations of Cuban society as the years went by. On the occasion of the birth of the National Radio, I am pleased to evoke Antonio (Ñico) Hernández Pérez, actor and director of Cuban radio and television programs. He masterfully characterized the character Bejuco Ramírez, created by Enrique Núñez Rodríguez for him, in the program ''Aventuras'', broadcast by CMQ Radio. In 1997 he performed again, produced by Radio Arte ''The Panther of Monte Escondido'', broadcast by Radio Rebelde.
Only three times he left the character to fulfill his duty with the Homeland. In early January 1960, he joined the fight against the threat of the United States. He also participated in the cleaning of bandits in the mountains of the Escambray and fought as a militiaman of Battalion 120, during the mercenary attack on Playa Girón, in 1961. Antonio (Ñico) Hernández integrated the group of the humorous-musical program ''Alegrías de Sobremesa'' with the character of Sarria, in Radio Progreso. Among the memorable performances on Cuban television, the character of ''Esopo'' in the play ''La Zorra y las Uvas'', in the ICR Theater program, stands out. He was director of International Relations at the Cuban Broadcasting Institute, and director of Programming until 1985, when he returned to radio as an actor and director.
Radio is part of everyday life, and its potential is endless. The professionalism and magic of words prestige the fascinating world of radio, which makes it possible for characters like Bejuco Ramírez to endure in the memory of listeners.
