The month of August owes its name to the Roman emperor Octavio Augusto. During this period of the year, in the history of Ariguanabo historical events predominate.
The Economic Society of Friends of the Country, is an institution that groups individuals concerned with the progress of Cuba. Founded at the end of the eighteenth century, it remains active and is one of the oldest associations on the Island. On August 31, 1834, the Ariguanabo Delegation of the Society was established. Although we do not have the precise date of its dissolution, its existence contributed decisively to manage the development of the Villa. In its first year of existence, it promoted the construction of the first bridge over the Govea stream.
The following year the creation of Colegio Santa Cristina was promoted. Another significant event occurred on August 15, 1855. The Captain General of the Island, Mr. José Gutiérrez de la Concha, granted the City Council of San Antonio de los Baños a permit to institute the annual Villa Fair. This celebration would take place between January 16 and 24, in honor of the Patron Saint. The first fair was held in 1858, with a duration of nine consecutive days.
The first Fire Department of the city emerged on August 17, 1859. Although it was dissolved in 1894, it was an organization necessary for the development of the Villa Ariguanabo. Another historical event, sadly famous, occurred on August 18, 1889: the death of Mr. Juan Cantalapiedra, a notable lawyer, philosopher, prosecutor, poet, writer, and the author of the ``Oda al Círculo de Artesanos''. At his home, on Gispert Street, No. 9, death surprised him, when he was fifty-five years old.
