The Institute of Tobacco Research, located in San Antonio de los Baños, has young people directly linked to the research activity: researchers, specialists, technicians and research assistants, who currently participate in 32 projects and 2 products tests.
The mitigation of the chemical degradation of the red ferralitic soils in the territory of the Tabacalera Lázaro Peña Enterprise, is a research project and master's thesis developed by the researcher, Yeramis Canepa. During 2017 and so far in 2018, researchers have achieved around 18 scientific results, economic achievements, direct introductions, as well as awards from the Ministry of the Sugar Industry and provincial awards from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
78% of its workers are qualified and the rest are taking training courses. The institute also has Basic Scientific-Technological Units and Experimental Stations, located in San Juan y Martínez, Cabaiguán and Manicaragua, and a Technology Dissemination Group in the province of Granma.
