The efforts of several comrades, led by Rigoberto Blanco, Domingo García and Carmelo de Armas, were not in vain. From the Municipal Party Committee in San Antonio de los Baños, Radio Ariguanabo broadcast for the first time. It was October 8, 1971. Forty-seven years after that date, we recall today the history of our radio station.
At the beginning, Radio Ariguanabo had few resources: a small radio plant (approximately eighty Watts), built by Domingo García; an audio console, invented by Carmelo de Armas; a recorder; and a Philips microphone, owned by a work center.
The programming of the radio station was fundamentally musical. The transmissions were from eight in the morning until eleven at night. Then, due to the lack of personnel, the schedule was reduced to nine hours a day, with the exception of Sundays.
The commemoration of historical dates and political, cultural and sporting activities in the region, were enriching the programming of Radio Ariguanabo. The radio station, using the remote control, broadcast acts from elementary schools, festivals of amateur artists, carnival parades and some baseball championships. Those first years were decisive for the later development of the radio station, through which the own voice of Ariguanabo is heard.
