San Antonio de los Baños had valuable representatives in the field of science, mainly in medicine. Among them, the brothers Sánchez Toledo, Matías Duque, Daniel Gispert and José Hipólito Pasoz. Miguel Sánchez Toledo stood out in the area of Physiology and Medical Physics.
Miguel Sánchez Toledo was born in San Antonio de los Baños on September 29, 1851. He studied Medicine at the University of Madrid, in Spain, graduating in 1874. He continued his studies at the University of Paris, where he obtained the title of Doctor in 1878, and at the University of Havana in 1899. He was also an academic of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana and founding member of the Society of Clinical Studies in the capital. Due to his valuable knowledge and scientific preparation, Dr. Miguel Sánchez Toledo was appointed on December 28, 1899, holder of the Chair of Physiology. In 1905 he had the honor of representing Cuba at the International Congress against Tuberculosis, held in Paris.
Dr. Miguel Sánchez Toledo is recognized for his performance as head of Physiology and Medical Physics at the University of Havana. He is considered one of the greatest physiologists in the country, with the merit of having been born in San Antonio de los Baños.
