Nila Ortega Casimiro

The participation of Ariguanabo women in the revolutionary processes developed in our country has always been recognized. Nila Ortega Casimiro was one of the females who from a very young age was linked to the fight against tyranny.

Nila Ortega Casimiro was born in San Antonio de los Baños on September 26, 1909, in the bosom of a working class family. At 14 years old, she started working in the cigar factory "La Gloria Cubana".

In 1924, she worked in the tobacco factory of Embarque, until October 1926. She belonged to the Local Union of Despalilladores since she began to work.

Nila participated in organizational activities and struggle for workers' demands. In 1931, Nila joined the struggle against the tyranny of Machado; she was part of the strikes and protest demonstrations that took place in the town during those years. She also maintained direct links with the comrades of the Communist Youth League and the International Workers' Defense.

Nila Ortega Casimiro was a prominent ariguanabense. She worked in the organization of different municipal unions as a member of the Joint Action Committee belonging to the National Workers Confederation. She helped as a political leader in the Popular Pro-education Association for Women. She participated as a delegate in the third Congress of Cuban Women in 1939. She joined the clandestine struggle in support of the revolutionary cause, making possible the triumph in January 1959. Later she held different responsibilities in the Committee of the Popular Socialist Party of Havana, in the Provincial Committee of the Integrated Revolutionary Organizations, in the Cuban Movement for Peace and others. She was also founder of the Party, the Federation of Cuban Women, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, the Territorial Troops Militias and the Civil Defense.

The meritorious work of Nila Ortega Casimiro in the service of the Homeland was recognized with the Frank País Medal, the Ana Betancourt Order and the August 23 Distinction granted by the FMC, among others. For her service to the country she deserves to be remembered.
