Agroecology in San Antonio de los Baños is frequently used, since technological packages are not enough to fight against pests and diseases that damage crops. The use of organic fertilizer is one of the most widespread. This fertilizer arises from the plants that are fermented in the soil; it is collected and applied in different crops, a healthy method that does not damage the plantations with its chemical residues. The polyculture and the rotation of the productions allow to improve and mitigate the scarcity of technological packages and obtain fresh food for the population.
With this objective, leaders of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the municipality participated in the Twelfth Provincial Event of Agroecology of the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF) held in Artemisa. Several commissions evaluated the work done by the province and Luis Vázquez Moreno, Doctor of Sciences, gave a conference on Climate Change.
The National Institute of Tobacco Research in San Antonio de los Baños presented 4 papers and the Experimental Station of Medicinal Plants 2; both works received recognition. The agricultural producer Sedén Guzmán presented a work on the Agroecological Farm ''El Silencio'' and Alfredo Ruiz Fleitas showed the results of the reproduction of endemic endangered species and of the urban reforestation in his Guardianes de la Naturaleza Environmental Project, in addition to the work entitled How to raise the environmental education in the new generations. Engineer Caridad Dorta, a retired worker of the Empresa Productora y Comercializadora de Semillas (Seed Production and Marketing Enterprise), received the ACTAF Award for the Work of Life.
