Tito Yllera, Commander of the Goicuría Regiment

An important event in San Antonio de los Baños, at the end of the war of 1895, was the entry of Cuban troops. The forces of the Goicuría Regiment remained for days near the Villa. Commander Tito Yllera was at the head of the liberating troops.

Commander Tito Yllera was born in Havana on March 20, 1870. He attended the first teaching in the prestigious school of Buries. Later, he graduated as a telegrapher and held a position in Victoria de Las Tunas, where he joined the insurgent forces on March 30, 1895. One of the significant actions of the War of Independence (1895) was the crossing of the trail from Júcaro to Morón. Tito Yllera participated in this action under the command of Antonio Maceo and Máximo Gómez.

At the beginning of 1896, when the invasion reached the province of Havana, Tito Yllera was at the head of an insurgent force, which operated around San Antonio de los Baños. At that time, he held the rank of Commander and was the head of the First Squadron of the Goicuría Regiment of the Liberation Army. During the signing of the armistice, the forces of the regiment camped near the town. On December 4, 1898, the forces commanded by Tito Yllera entered the village of Ariguanabo. In this way, it was in charge of the population and together with Captain Martín Alpízar they established the Comandancia. However, the victory was frustrated by the US intervention on the island. Tito Yllera was one of the founders of the Liberal Party in San Antonio. In 1908 he was appointed Tax Inspector of the Ministry of Finance, a position he held until his death on January 30, 1927, in La Víbora, La Habana.
