In the 1924 elections in Cuba, Gerardo Machado Morales was elected president of the Republic. This was the preferred candidate of the Yankees for their antecedents in the service of the interests of the United States and for their hatred towards the working people. Machado occupied the presidency in 1925 and inaugurated one of the bloodiest dictatorships in the history of Cuba.

The people against tyranny

As soon as Machado took the presidency, he put into practice what he had promised, that under his government no strike would last more than 24 hours, he would not admit it; whoever would dare, will pay with jail or with life. Repression, disappearances, torture, imprisonment and murder were daily practice. The students, workers, peasants and intellectuals, and fundamentally the communists, were victims of the terror policy implemented by Machado. However, protests and strikes lasted more than 24 hours and the repressive forces could not stop them.

On March 20, 1930

On March 20, 1930, the end of the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado began. This day a general strike was held, led by the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and the National Workers' Confederation of Cuba (CNOC), under the leadership of the communist leader Rubén Martínez Villena. More than 200 thousand workers and employees practically stopped the country and denounced the Machado regime's surrender to US imperialism and also the exploitation of the workers. Although the  actions could not achieve all their purposes, their experiences provided important lessons for future battles. Three years later, in August, the masses would once again join the strike. This time the tyranny of Gerardo Machado, finally came to the end.
