Humor is the way to present, judge or comment on reality, highlighting the comic side of things. For the inhabitants of San Antonio de los Baños, this element constitutes an inseparable component of their lives. With a rich history linked to humor, the town is identified as the Villa del Humor.
When the Humor Biennial became official, it was agreed to create a Museum dedicated to the rescue and dissemination of the humoristic heritage. This institution would treasure, investigate and disseminate works of universal humor, particularly national and local. The construction, built in 1827, was chosen as the headquarters. It belonged to Miguel de Cárdenas, Marqués de Campo Florido and Encarnación de Cárdenas, daughter of the founder of the Villa, who lived in San Antonio de los Baños. The Party and the Government of the municipality supported the initiative, so it was determined that the Biennial would be inaugurated along with the Museum of Humor. In coordination with the Union of Journalists of Cuba, the Directorate of Heritage and the National Directorate of Museums, the building was restored and the works began to be received.
Caricaturists and relatives donated some works, always keeping in perspective that the works awarded in the Biennials would enrich the museum's collections. In this way, the First International Biennial and the Museum of Humor were inaugurated on March 17, 1979.
