The rich history, the humorous tradition and the caricature developed during a century, allows to understand why the biennials are celebrated in San Antonio de los Baños and why there is a Museum of Humor.
This history begins with the constitution of the Municipal Commission of History in 1970. Integrated by Jose Rafael Lauzán, historian of the city; Homero Perdomo, president; Miguel Ángel Miqueli, Carlos Ruiz, Ricardo de Armas and Rubén Suárez Quidiello, members of the Commission. The historical investigations and the works directed to rescue the traditions of the Villa showed two tendencies: to be a pioneer of the Workers Movement and of Humorism in Cuba.
Conferences and exhibitions began to be organized. In 1976, the exhibition ''Abela in Memoriam'' was held. In 1977, an exhibition was organized in the "Circulo de Artesanos", on the occasion of the twenty years of "El Loquito". It was a retrospective of René's work, which also included his current works. The exhibition was attended by the former Vice Minister of Culture, Quintín Pino Machado, who witnessed the work carried out by the House of History. He was very impressed with the work, so the next day he visited the offices of Revolución y Cultura magazine, so that a publication was dedicated to San Antonio de los Baños, in order to disseminate the intense cultural work done in the municipality.
The work team of the magazine learned about the humoristic traditions of San Antonio de los Baños. Several personalities and popular people from the town were interviewed. As a result, a publication dedicated to the Villa was published in August 1977, identifying it on a mural of the Railway Station with the characters of El Bobo and El Loquito. From that moment on, San Antonio began to be called Villa del Humor.
