It was the year 1892, José Martí was in the process of preparation for the war that he called "necessary". Then emerged the daily that would promote such purposes. In New York, on March 14, 1892, the Patria newspaper emerged, which later became the official organ of the Cuban Revolutionary Party (PRC).
"Patria" was an unusual publication, with a very suggestive name. The main note of its first edition was the reproduction of the Bases of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, founded approximately one month later, to achieve the independence of Cuba and Puerto Rico. As its creator José Martí said "Patria was born to gather and love, and to live in the passion of truth".
Extraordinary respect deserves that organ, which more than a newspaper, was Martí's voice, calling for the Necessary War. The publication was successful for its excellent articles and its friendly and moving spirit. To honor the date, since the first years of the 1990s, the Cuban Press Day is celebrated on March 14.
