Soil is a natural resource directly linked to the production of food. In San Antonio de los Baños actions are planned in the productive forms, together with the training programs developed by specialists in Science, Technology and Environment.
María del Carmen López Báez, in charge of the CITMA Section in the territory, stated: "Among the environmental problems that affect the soil are erosion and salinization, droughts and desertification. These processes cause their degradation, which has several causes: deforestation, the use of pesticides and certain agricultural practices''.
In the municipality we have the Environmental Strategy, elaborated from the association of different organisms and entities, with the objective of ruling the environmental policy in the territory, characterizing the main problems and proposing the ways for its prevention, solution or minimization to protect the environment, the rational use of natural resources and adaptation to the effects of climate change, in order to achieve the goals of a sustainable social economic development.
According to the strategy, for the 2016-2020 period, halting soil degradation in the province of Artemisa is a priority. In San Antonio de los Baños, the strategy is based on the application of measures for the soil conservation and on the introduction of innovative initiatives.
In the Agricultural Enterprise plans are drawn up for the agroecological management of soils; and the specialists of the Institute of Tobacco Research play an important role in the experimental verification of soil properties for cultivation. It is up to producers to apply agroecological agriculture in order to obtain organic food, while conserving the fertility of the land and respecting the environment.
