The greatest of its sacrifices

It was February 1959. The revolutionary government did not work with the required force. The people demanded that some social measures be taken, since the internal crisis intensified. A prestigious authority was needed to take over the Government, as Prime Minister.

Regarding Fidel, It was known that it would not be easy for him to assume the position of Prime Minister. Several times he had stated his intention to remain as the Government's inspector, since he could operate with complete freedom, without being tied to meetings, official acts and other functions. However, given the seriousness of the situation, it was necessary to take drastic measures to avoid a possible disaster. The Head of the Revolution, with his innate intuition, realized that there was no other solution and opted for the greatest of his sacrifices: to join the Government as Prime Minister.

This was not an easy decision for the historical leader of the Revolution, but it meant a deep understanding of the need to sacrifice himself for the country. The investiture was broadcast on radio and television on February 13, 1959. His words stand out: "Paradoxically, when I receive the honor of being in charge of the Council of Ministers, I am deeply concerned about the responsibility that has been placed on my shoulders, for the seriousness and devotion that I have always put in the fulfillment of my duty. ''

In the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cuba (extraordinary edition of February 14, 1959), Commander Fidel's investiture as Prime Minister of Cuba was published. Thus began Fidel's long political career, eager to see how much the Revolution could do. Later he would become the President of the Republic of Cuba.
