The Maternal and Child Health Program (PAMI) ensures care for pregnant women who face different risks during pregnancy. This was stated by Dr. Liset Duany Pulido, specialist in Integral General Medicine, in charge of the PAMI in San Antonio de los Baños.
According to the specialist, pregnant women are guaranteed comprehensive care in all basic groups and health areas. The attention is differentiated according to the risk they present. The multidisciplinary team, including the psychologist, nutrition, genetic and stomatology consultations and other specialists, provide follow-up to patients who, due to various causes, present risks during pregnancy.
Regarding the most common risks that appear during the period of pregnancy are the chronic diseases suffered by the mother, so they must be referred to a specific specialist, said the doctor. Also, gestational hypertension, which may occur before or during pregnancy. Similarly, diabetes mellitus and anemia, diseases that must be controlled from the beginning of pregnancy. Duany Pulido also referred to the social risk that pregnancy causes in adolescence, because not all adolescents are prepared for motherhood.
Before all these health risks, the Maternal Home and the General Teaching Hospital Iván Portuondo guarantee the necessary perinatal care to those pregnant women who require it.
