CITMA for a viable environment

The delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment CITMA, in San Antonio de los Baños, directs its work to achieve the protection of its different areas and thus face climate change. According to María del Carmen López, head of the CITMA Section in the territory, the Science and Technology Strategy for the ''Tarea Vida'' (Life Task), responsible for the protection of the coastal zones, is  underway in the municipality.

For several years the territory has put into practice a strategy to solve the drought, situation that negatively affects the production of food. Among the objectives is the commitment to increase the forest area; therefore, compliance with the reforestation plans of state and private entities is verified every year. The interest of reforesting the hydro-regulatory strip of the Ariguanabo River, belonging to the Ariguanabo Hydrographic Basin, is maintained. The basin was declared a Protected Natural Landscape and an object of national interest, as it is one of the most important for water supply in Havana. The problem of the rational use of water is crucial for the territory, so alternatives for its distribution are applied, as well as measures for the use of irrigation in the plantations.

For the protection of the environment and the treatment of the land, without compromising the state of natural resources, measures are applied for the conservation and improvement of soils such as the elimination of the burning of materials in wooded areas and the felling of trees. in farms, the application of measures for the conservation and improvement of soils and the increase of crop species. Hence, the urgency to find a solution to face desertification and land degradation, because this will affect the production of food, important support of the lives of human beings.
