Soil conservation is everyone's task

Climate change affects the planet's natural resources, such is the case of soils. San Antonio de los Baños has an extensive agricultural area. For this reason, specialists from the Section of Science, Technology and Environment Section (CITMA) work together with different centers and entities to contribute to soil protection.

María del Carmen López Báez, in charge of the CITMA Section in San Antonio de los Baños, said that the misuse and management of soils in a sustainable manner is the main cause of the appearance or acceleration of degradation processes, enabling the appearance of other harmful environmental phenomena, such as desertification and loss of natural fertility of affected soils.

On the other hand, López Báez added that the so-called impoverishment, due to loss of the effective depth and content of organic matter of some soils, becomes an important factor for agricultural yields. Hence, the efficient use of organic fertilizers and sustainable agroecological techniques facilitates eliminating any problem that this natural component presents.

Regarding the linking of the CITMA representatives with centers and entities of the territory, the official highlighted the participation of the presidents of different productive forms, as well as representatives of the Agriculture Delegation and the Agricultural Enterprise in the workshop developed by the specialist Yeramis Cánepa, researcher of the Tobacco Institute.

This meeting was related to the care and conservation of the soil, which showed that the training contributes to a better use of the soil, as well as the use of ecological products. In addition, it served as the culmination of upcoming events with the aim of solving the problems related to the use, care and conservation of natural resources.

Finally, María del Carmen López Báez referred to the Environmental Strategy of San Antonio de los Baños, a project that summarizes the actions that must be undertaken to face climate change and its influence on natural resources.
