New regulations for cell phone use in Cuba (Check your IMEI)

From May 18 of this year, new regulations for the functioning of cell phones will be established, as stipulated in Resolution 12/16 of the Ministry of Communications.

The campaign carried out by the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA), has among its purposes to issue regulations for the registration, control and use of mobile phones in Cuba.

Leydi Alfonso Espinosa, specialist of the Territorial Division of Etecsa in Artemisa explained that the campaign is motivated by the increase of files associated with criminal acts due to theft and / or loss of cell phones, the fraudulent change of the International Mobile Station Equipment IMEI, (code that allows to identify any mobile worldwide), made by unscrupulous citizens to allow the illegal use of the phones that are blacklisted (blocked); and thus protect the population from the acquisition of these equipment.

One of the regulations states that those users who insert their identification card, known as SIM, in a blacklisted phone, will see their line automatically blocked. For these cases, the owner of the line has up to 5 working days to go to the commercial offices of EtECSA and clarify the causes of the event in order to unblock the line; If the person does not go to the office, the service will be canceled.

The procedures associated with the blocking process can be through the customer service number (52642266), to verify that if he is the owner of the line. If you wish to include it in the Black List, you must go to the commercial offices with the documentation that validates the client's property.

Alfonso Espinosa also explained that all phones that have duplicate or false IMEI will stop working in the Cuban network, so they must be replaced before the established date. This code is unique and distinguishes an authentic team. It can be found in different ways and all must coincide, he said.

The number is below the battery, generally it can be consulted in the Menu Settings of the mobile or it is displayed on the screen by dialing * # 06 #. The numbering is made up of 15 digits, without letters and it can not start with 00. Your verification will be done on the ETECSA website, and at the bottom of the page, you will have access to Check IMEI Code option. Validation should be checked systematically, since a phone with the same IMEI could appear over time.
