Changes usually generate uncertainties, doubts, concerns and diverse interpretations. Self-employment in Cuba, this new form of work and employment, generated all this during its implementation. However after several years it is an obvious reality.
Thousands of Cubans are self-employed workers. The sellers of agricultural products, food processors, operators of electrical equipment and the opening of bars and cafeterias have led Cuban society to accept this form of labor management.
All these services are a source of income and therefore new job offers, especially for youth. Now, self-employment is a fact in Cuba, but much remains to be done to perfect its development in accordance with socialist legality.
The authorization process to exercise this work modality must be in correspondence with each territory and according to the most urgent needs of the population. Likewise, the control and compliance with the rules and regulations is a key element to maintain what has been achieved.
Self-employment fulfills its social role. This allows the people who exercise it to help the State to pay for health, education, pensions and salaries. It also develops tax awareness, a social duty of each citizen.
