Attention and prevention are necessary

In San Antonio de los Baños special attention is paid to patients with kidney failure, a disease that can be prevented but has no cure and is usually progressive, according to the statements of Dr. Miladis Gutiérrez Millo,  infectious diseases specialist of the Health Directorate in the territory.

According to the statistics registered, in 2017, 23 new cases of patients with chronic renal failure were diagnosed in the municipality (16 men and 7 women). These figures show an increase in the disease, especially in men. The specialist added that there are a total of 90 patients, (35 women).

Gutierrez Millo stressed that despite the blockade that the United States has maintained for more than half a century, the Cuban State guarantees free care for patients with chronic kidney disease. Hemodialysis, the procedure used in these cases, increases patient survival, serves as a preparation for renal transplantation in some cases and has a favorable impact on quality of life.

Finally, the specialist stressed the need to maintain a correct nutrition low in fat, salt, carbohydrates and sugar; always consulting with a specialist, because each patient has different physical and metabolic characteristics. He also stressed the need for prevention with healthy lifestyles, as well as the practice of exercises.
