Alicio Garcés Pupo, is the name of the patriot honoring the Base Association 01-14 of the Combatants of the Cuban Revolution, in the People's Council of the Urban Center of San Antonio de los Baños. This adopted son of Ariguanabo was born in 1909 in Gibara, province of Holguín. There he received his first and only studies of primary education up to the sixth grade, unable to continue due to the economic needs of the family. As soon as he was 15 years old, he started working as a cigar maker, a trade he practiced for almost fifteen years; several of them in the "El Crédito" factory, in San Antonio de los Baños.
He began his revolutionary activities after the coup of Fulgencio Batista in 1952. He was imprisoned several times, but neither jail nor beatings changed Alicio's attitude, and as soon as he was released he resumed his activities with more enthusiasm and determination, transmitting optimism, confidence in the future, faith in victory and will to persist in his objective.
In the midst of the poverty and social inequalities suffered by the majority of the people at that time, the young man began to forge his thought that identified him with the labor movement and socialist ideas. He distinguished himself by his participation in the Popular Socialist Party, as a member of the Municipal Committee and chairman of the Socialist Committee. He was also secretary of Acts and Finance of the Union of Torcedores in Ariguanabo, and responsible for the distribution of the newspaper "Hoy".
He lived for a time in the Cuban capital, where he continued the fight against Batista's tyranny. In his house the Clandestine Havana-Interior Provincial Committee was active. When constituting the Revolutionary Government, Alicio Garcés Pupo also demonstrated the strength of the ideals that he defended. He was one of the founders of the Revolutionary National Militias and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) in San Antonio de los Baños, and a member of the Department of State Security. He served in the ranks of the Communist Party of Cuba, and held responsibilities in the union of workers of the Cuba-Tabaco Company.
His ideology and actions in the construction of a socialist society, accompanied him until his death on December 21, 1993. The unconditional dedication to the revolutionary cause offered Alicio Garcés Pupo the opportunity to show his personal integrity and human virtues.
