Preserve the soil, a challenge for production

The program to conserve and improve the soils in San Antonio de los Baños is a priority for Ariguanabese producers, according to Heidy Fernández Salazarte, Agroecology, Science and Technical Officer of the Directorate of the Association of Small Farmers.

The official said that in Cuba the National Program for Soil Conservation and Improvement, implemented since 2000, seeks an adequate treatment of land to obtain sufficient quality goods, without compromising the state of this natural resource and its capacity. of recovery. Of course, in Ariguanabo many of these actions are implemented because it is an eminently agricultural municipality.

Among the main actions carried out to conserve this important natural resource is the use of live and dead barriers, dams, green fertilizers and contour sowings. In this way the process of natural erosion and that of formation is balanced, and the soil is maintained.

Fernandez Salazarte also stressed that the use of organic matter such as earthworm humus, compost and other agroecological forms allow sustainable soil management and thus increase their productivity by obtaining higher quality products.
