Frank País was in charge of the preparations for the armed uprising in Santiago de Cuba. Under his guidance, the heroine Celia Sánchez organized detachments of peasants who would be aware of the landing of the Granma yacht. Therefore, the top leadership of the July 26 Movement had decided to take this action.

Frank received a telegram from Mexico with the agreed signal, to indicate that 5 days later the disembarkation should take place. Adjusted all plans, at dawn on November 30, the groups of young people quartered left to fulfill the entrusted actions. Some actions could not be executed according to the plan, although in this effort died prominent revolutionaries such as Tony Alomá, Pepito Tey and Otto Parellada. For several hours, many places in the city were dominated.  In the face of the difficult situation, Frank ordered the retirement. That November 30, 1956, for the first time the people of Santiago saw the glorious olive green uniform and the red and black bracelet that identified the members of the July 26 Movement.

Although the uprising did not coincide with the landing of the Granma, it had great historical significance, because it demonstrated the decision to continue the struggle, gave strength and prestige to the Movement and shook the city of Santiago de Cuba and other places in the province. The people knew the disposition of the revolutionary youth to fulfill the commitment of, not to finish 1956 without being free or martyrs.
