International Day of the Girl

Photo: InternetPhoto: Internet Since the beginning of mankind, being a girl has been a problem. Even the princesses of the classic tales have suffered discrimination. Women have always been seen as the weakest gender.

Being the person in charge of the housework, care and education of the family; giving love without expecting anything and giving birth to life has not been enough to earn the respect they deserve.

Infanticide, couple assignment, genital mutilation, child marriage, maternal mortality, economic exclusion and slavery are some of the miseries suffered by girls. In spite of these mistreatments to which the girls are subjected, in a great part of the world the voices have echoed. That is why, every October 11 is celebrated the International Day of the Girl.

Since 2009, NGO Plan International, a non-governmental organization operating in several countries around the world, has promoted the creation of a day for the girls through its international campaign "For Being a Girl", aimed at eliminating the double discrimination that millions of girls across the world suffer.

On December 19, 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations in Resolution 66/170 decided to designate on 11 October, the International Day of the Girl. The resolution itself highlights the need to invest and sensitize society about the necessary empowerment of girls, with the aim of breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence of which they are victims, and to promote and protect their human rights. International Day of the Girl aims to recognize the rights of girls and raise public awareness of the exceptional problems they face throughout the world.

This year, International Day of the Girl has the theme: "Empowering girls: before and after crises". Knowing that there are 24 hours dedicated to our genre may be an injection for us, heroines of the present that give continuity to life and are a source of love.
