The International Museum of Humor was inaugurated on March 17, 1979, the first of its kind in Cuba and Latin America and the second in the world. The historical consciousness of a Villa that gave renowned comedians such as Manuel Alfonso, Eduardo Abela, Jesus de Armas, René de la Nuez, Pedro Rodríguez García (Peroga), José Luis Posada (Spanish by birth but Ariguanabense by heart) and Ángel Boligán, among others, was the reason for its creation.
Since 1915, exhibitions of graphic humor began to take place in San Antonio de los Baños. The First Forum of Humorists was held in Havana in March 1978. One of its sessions was organized in the Ariguanabo. There, Miguel Miqueli referred to the history and importance of humor in San Antonio de los Baños. It was then proposed that the city was the headquarter of the International Biennial of Humor and shortly after it is proposed to create a museum that would treasure the humorous graphic heritage.
At the First Humor Biennial, the Museum opened its doors. Eight rooms show the history of Cuban caricature, from 1848 until recent works, passing through important periods of the Republic and the Revolution. Nearly 15 thousand Cuban and world exponents are treasured there, in addition to the specialized bibliography for researchers and specialists.
