Each hurricane leaves indelible traces, sadness, desolation, disasters. But it also leaves excellent lessons of love, solidarity and devotion. Lessons of passion for the motherland that do not admit words, because these are diminished before the attitude of many people or of somebody.
A child became news on social networks. Jose Daniel de la Torre Sampier, just five years old, found the bust of José Martí dragged by the waves of the sea in the patio of his house. It was dirty and mistreated. He hugged and washed it, then went to see the school principal and asked permission to put it in the yard and honor it every morning. Meanwhile, the little prince of this emotional story looks calmly at his Martí, next to the same sea it was dragged into. convinced that he did something useful.
This is Cuba. So are our children, firm to the principles of love for the country. The boy hugged the maestro of the Golden Age, as did Nené Traviesa when she hugged her black doll. This time, the man of the Versos Sencillos was not elegant. This time he arrived helpless, unable to hold his image against the fury of the Caribbean Sea. But also, this time found the soft hands of a Cuban boy. He found the sensitivity of a heart that, unknowingly, made its way by walking.
The boy who hugged Martí goes to history with Hurricane Irma. He, by the force of his kindness and patriotism, she, by the ferocious attack that left us breathless. A five-year-old boy, a category five hurricane. Nothing similar, but strong, very strong for mortals.
