Agriculture is the economic activity dedicated to the use of natural resources (vegetable and animal origin), in order to produce food for the population. San Antonio de los Baños is an eminently agricultural municipality with a large proportion of productive soils, which favors a growing agricultural development. Technological development is one of our main achievements. Irrigation equipment, tractors and other implements are systematically controlled to verify their quality.
The objective of the agricultural sciences is to increase production, yields and diversification. Research programs are aimed at improving the quality of the seed and thus obtaining better yields during the harvesting of food, vegetables, minor fruits and others, as well as improving the management, feeding and health systems of livestock and poultry.
In the municipality, the main applications of science and technology are aimed at the use of organic fertilizers to ensure the reasonable growth of crops with a high agricultural value, as well as obtaining new crop varieties. Clearing and subsoiling of the soils favors a good development of the plants and maintains the hydrophysical properties of the soil. Sowing velvetbean, soybeans, sorghum or other crops enables natural humification processes to occur. In livestock, artificial inseminations are performed to increase the stock.
Luis Núñez González, head of the Department of Agricultural Development, belonging to the Delegation of Agriculture in Ariguanabo, said that the strategies for the performance and production of cooperatives are based on the principle of efficiency and quality of their products. He added that they have the advice of the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF), whose main objective is the preparation of specialists and productive meetings to achieve integration in the management of resources, in favor of local development.
