In San Antonio de los Baños people with severe mental retardation receive medical and social care through the joint work of the Health Department, social workers and other entities, in favor of raising the quality of life of these human beings.
From the Administration Council in San Antonio de los Baños, care is given to people with a specific disability, including the severe mental retardation that manifests itself from the earliest ages and is characterized by an intellectual functioning, significantly inferior to the average functioning, as well as alterations in two or more functional areas, such as personal autonomy, communication, work skills and use of leisure time. In addition, medical care is guaranteed through specialized consultations and home visits by the family doctor, says Saymara Hernández Samá, head of social workers in Ariguanabo.
The attention to these people results an extraordinary humanitarian task, which must be reached with a high dose of love, understanding and solidarity. In the clinics and polyclinics of the different popular councils, both urban and rural areas and Iván Portuondo Hospital, social workers work together with the specialists.
During home visits, they exchange with the family and identify the problems that affect them. These people receive subsidies to expedite the repair of homes, as well as various resources: kitchen modules, personal care products, clothes, shoes and mattresses. There are also cultural activities, such as the celebration of collective birthdays and ephemeris, says Saymara.
