The Municipal Health Department of San Antonio de los Baños maintains, within the health strategy, the prevention, control and follow-up of specific groups with risks of contracting HIV-AIDS. Within the program of sexually transmitted infections, HIV is monitored from each health area, where doctors and nurses have an impact on groups in the urban and rural areas, says Dr. Martín Rodríguez González, responsible for the STI / HIV Program.
The specialist adds that from the characterization of the health area, they emphasize on specific risk groups, including men who have sex with men, patients with STIs, infected patients, donors, pregnant women, prisoners. All of these people are given information on how to care for their health, maintain stable relationships, have a medical examination, promote condom use, and practice safe sex. The territory has specialized consultations to care for infected patients, for immunological and virological follow-up. In addition, research and the health care program are implemented through the direct intervention of doctors in actions of health promotion and prevention.
The Maternal and Infant Program focuses on supporting pregnant women living with HIV to reduce the possibility of transmission to their children through access to antiretroviral drugs, promotion of counseling, responsible motherhood and paternity, and how to avoid transmission of HIV during pregnancy.
