The 5th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), takes place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, for the unity of all Latin American and Caribbean people, for prosperity towards the same economic, political and financial destiny and for the defense of a continent that is our great home. Cuba participates with the expectation of contributing to the strengthening of the Community founded in 2011 and to the unity within the diversity of gender and race.
This event is an opportunity to continue working in favor of political consensus, Latin American and Caribbean unity and integration; for the benefit of our peoples.
Among the topics to be analyzed by this Summit is to ensure peace in the region, based on the precepts of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted at the Second Summit of CELAC held in Havana in 2014; also to ensure that all the states of the world are governed by the postulates in their relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, to increase their solidarity with Venezuela, in defense of their free self-determination, sovereignty and peace, to try to stop the intrusion and interference of other states in the internal affairs of our nations and to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US governments on Cuba.
CELAC counts among its greatest challenges with the eradication of poverty, hunger and inequality. The extraordinary potential of the continent, should be used much better, as Latin American and Caribbean countries are the third economic power worldwide. We are the continent with the second largest oil reserve, the greatest biodiversity on the planet and a high concentration of global mining resources.
The America of all will grow, because the ideas of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez live in the proceedings of its leaders. Raúl Castro, Rafael Correa, Juan Manuel Santos, Nicolás Maduro and Evo Morales, among others, will have the sacred mission of making America be only of their children, free and independent
