No violence
Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, the revolutionary process included, among the priorities, the participation of women in various sectors. The situation of women before the triumph of the Revolution was marked by discrimination. On January 1st, 1959 in Santiago de Cuba Fidel Castro referred to the situation of women and recalled that the mission of the revolutionary process was to put an end to the social subordination of the most oppressed. Fidel said: "Woman is a sector of our country that also needs to be redeemed, because it is a victim of discrimination at work and in other aspects of life... Our revolution will be jugded in future years, one of the questions for what we will be judged is the way in which we have solved, in our society and in our homeland, women’s problems, even if it is one of the problems of the revolution that require more tenacity, more firmness, more perseverance and effort. "
The Cuban woman was the main beneficiary of the social and popular achievements, she assumed the leading role and undertook to reach the final emancipation and citizenship. Today it represents 65.6 per cent of the country's professional and technical strength, mainly in education, health, sciences, innovations and technologies. Statistics show that Cuba was the first to sign and the second to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Despite the blockade imposed by the United States for more than 50 years, the country fulfilled a large part of the UN Millennium Development Goals, including the promotion and empowerment of women.
Cuban society is still working to achieve greater participation of women in all areas of social life and to revitalize the work of the organization that brings them together: the FMC. In Cuba, women have achieved a deep participation in all areas of social life. Despite the advances already seen in Cuban society, much remains to be done in changing mentalities; the political will exists.
Proud of the Martí’s essence on the revolution, women strive to grow even more, concious that "The whole country is in the woman’’.
