Preventive actions for the reduction of cerebrovascular diseases

San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba.- In this municipality, medical offices follow up non-infectious chronic diseases, including cerebrovascular diseases, for which preventive actions are taken to control and reduce risk factors.

Cerebrovascular accident is defined as ischemic or hemorrhagic, depending on the cause. It is identified as the result of brain accidents, thrombosis, cranio-encephalic traumas and hemiplegia among others, says Anabel Ortega, graduate in nursing. She adds that it is the most common cause of neurological disability in adult population, that’s why it is a priority in daily medical practice with old people. The Basic Health Group has an Internal Medicine specialist who examines the patient. She emphasizes that the disease needs rehabilitation services, so that, depending on the patient's limitation this patient is followed up in the rehabilitation room.

Anabel insists on the need for early disease detection as well as the control of blood pressure, cholesterol, alcohol abuse, diabetes, and smoking due to the incidence of these factors in the the community. She points out that education and health promotion are necessary, so talks, face to face care and intervention of specialists are maintained as preventive health education actions with the aim of changing, above all, lifestyles and dietary habits.
