Baseball or football?

Cuban baseballCuban baseball Since I was a child and I have heard that Cuba is a land of baseball players. Life changes. As a child I enjoyed Cuban baseball. I regularly visited my people’s stadium and the Latino Americano. I loved Jose Antonio Fuentes, Ubaldo Govín, Cecilio Amat, Luis Campos, Marquetti, Medina, Casanova, Muñoz, Urquiola, Rogelio and Vinent. After four decades, I realize that it is not so. Now the sport who commands on the island is football. Did the national sport in Cuba change? Now instead of seeing children play "Cuatro esquinas", "taco" or baseball, I see boys kicking the ball looking for a goal.

Why does this happen? I believe that the two main reasons that encouraged the transition from baseball to football, is the poor quality of our current baseball games and too much football on television. It is football and you have to transmit it because young people love it. What about those who love baseball? How long and how far? A lot of football; and baseball?... Only the National Series, battered and lonely, as no longer fill stadiums.

How long and how far this contention between football and baseball? If we want to encourage in children love for patriotic symbols, we must necessarily teach good baseball. We need to convey images of the great moments in Cuban baseball. Industriales’ history, the life of José Antonio Huelga, "Curro" Perez, Santiago "Changa" Mederos and many others who left their mark on Cuban baseball.

So new generations will talk about baseball and love it with passion. Otherwise, we will admit that our children and youth just talk about Messi, Cristiano, Neymar and Luis Suárez.
