Catholic slaves in San Antonio de los Baños

During the early centuries of the colonial rule in Cuba, the formation of our nationality began. From the mix of Aboriginal, African and Spanish, a new social type emerged: the ‘’criollo’’. He began to differentiate himmself from his parents, expressing feelings of love for the land where he was born. In Ariguanabo, a sui generis example of acculturation is documented.

In a house located in a sugarmill occurred religious scenes never seen. A priest, who was recovering at that house, took care of indoctrinating slaves of both sexes. With brief and simple explanations of the Mass, he prepared them to celebrate every Sunday and holidays, in a chapel located in front of the house. The cleric realized that his words were fruitfully heard by those docile souls and convinced them of the need for confession. Some slaves soon arrived each morning to confess to the priest.

They did not get tired of hearing the voice of the priest exhorting the cult of virtue and goodness. It is said that in the afternoon of the Maundy Thursday twelve brown old men met at a dinner presided over by the priest. Perhaps this was the ‘’criolla’’ version of the Last Supper. A curious story that demonstrates the cultural domination exerted by Spanish on Aboriginal and African.
