San Antonio de los Baños has in its river an area called ‘’El Charquito del Negro’’. It is true that in the past there was a big stone on the bank of the river which was hit by lightning and splitted into two pieces; one of its parts fell into the water. The name of ‘’El Charquito del Negro’’ emerged from a simple but unfortunate fact. It is said that a black child was bathing in the river and suddenly… a big stone dropped on him; despite the efforts of those present there, the stone could not be lifted and then he drowned.
It is true that at present this part of the river is low, so it is common to see children bathing and enjoying mainly during the summer. There are countless stories of the Ariguanabo river which identifies us as inhabitants of this town. The people of San Antonio de los Baños are privileged to enjoy a river; a river that not everyone cares carefully and screams for its health and sanitation.
