Anniversary of the National Revolutionary Militias

Militias Militias Since the revolutionary triumph, the Cuban people was organized to guarantee the legitimate protection of the conquered peace, so responded to threats of military aggression from the United States and to terrorists’ actions.

On October 26th, 1959 in front of the former Presidential Palace, now the Museum of the Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, called men and women to organize themselves for the defense of the homeland. With the establishment of the National Revolutionary Militias, Cubans were integrated into a military civic organization to defend the national independence.

After January 1st, the US government began the economic war, state terrorism, espionage, subversión and assassination of leaders; promoting counter-revolution not only in cities but also in the mountains. Given this aggressive policy, Cubans joined together guided by integrity, justice and patriotism; so joined the militias workers, peasants, students and intellectuals with the aim of facing the actions organized inside and outside the country.

The National Revolutionary Militias were the quarry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces FAR and the Interior Ministry. There are countless examples of courage and bravery of the fighters in the fight against bandits and mercenaries, examples of what we faced to defend our sovereignty.
