As many women, Mercedes Barco Alonso decided to join the revolutionary cause against the successive governments of the pseudo-republic. Filled with humility and courage, brought in her soul the philosophy of freedom. Mercedes was born in San Antonio de los Baños on May 17th, 1899 and died on October 25th, 1986 but Ariguanabo kept the essence of guerrilla and multiplied the example in every member of the Association of Combatants of the People's Council 01-20, Urban Center, which honors the union with her name.
She was a journalist who fighted for women's rights and the cause of socialism. Besides, Mercedes was member of the Communist Revolutionary Union and joined the Popular Socialist Party, where she contributed to unite masses to achieve unity and developed a wide propaganda for social transformations in order to obtain national liberation. In the 1930s, Mercedes founded a Women's Club for revolutionary activities and organized a committee helping the Spanish Republicans during the civil war. She participated in the distribution of the magazine "Alma Mater" and wrote a section on women's rights.
Throughout the struggle for national liberation, many were the sacrifices of the worthy cubans, identified with the cause of freedom. One of those women was Mercedes Alonso Barco, who from her native land gave her unconditional support for the country’s freedom.
