Not many nations pay appropriate attention to feeding. Millions of people die every year from hunger. Before the Revolution, Cuba was in a similar situation, but the new government carried out policies aimed at feeding the people, even after February 7th, 1962, when the US government imposed its genocidal economic, commercial and financial embargo against our country.
According to statistics published this year by the Venezuelan network ‘’Telesur’’, the Cuban government spends a billion dollars annually to subsidize rice, coffee, meats, grains, pasta, eggs, sugar, salt, bread and other foods every cuban receives monthly at a low price. Telesur also reports that powder milk and soy yogurt are provided for cuban children and additionally sick people are gvien medical diets. Nevertheless, the quota is insufficient to meet their needs. This situation would be different if our country could import products from the United States.
Obviously, not only food production is affected by the economic embargo. US companies are not fully authorized to invest in Cuba. So, lack of capital, agricultural machinery, materials, chemicals and other products to develop this sector and increase production weaken the cuban agricultural movement. Normally these goods, such as food must be bought in other countries at higher cost, especially in transport área. Those ships that get to cuban port are sanctioned. Besides that, cubans are prohibited to make international transactions through US Banks.
Even so essential guarantees are provided and offered to people in need by alternatives such as Systems Family Care (SAF). Programs also aimed to citizen power. In Cuba a new economic model has been applied and the first results are already visible. The country's leadership will not abandon any cuban and never allow the humiliations lived before 1959 to return.
