Hurricanes
Directors and workers, responsible for people's life and for the protection of economic, social and personal goods, emphasize on the importance of people's education during the hurricane season. The exercise ‘’Meteoro’’ teaches how to face the hurricanes that begins in June and ends in November.
''Meteoro'' is a unique experience of the island since 1986. In the early years only government organizations were instructed, in order to face hurricanes and tropical storms. But there were faults in the preparation of the people in situations of disasters caused by nature, so from 1986 this exercise is aimed at preparing the population and organizations at all levels.
Today people’s education grows to the point that a child knows the rules of protection at home and at school. In our country there is a whole structure that allows guide and prepare our people to protect the assets of the state and the population. Plans are created to face these phenomena. With the help of different enterprises and organizations the main efforts are concentrated in sanitation of urban areas, Ariguanabo river and La Cueva del Sumidero.
Perhaps one of the greatest and most unknown achievements of the Cuban Revolution has been the creation of a Civil Defense able to minimize the loss of human lives because of natural disasters, particularly hurricanes. Names such as Charley, Lily, Sandy and even Freddy taught us to be more alert, gain knowledge and education in these terms, so that victory is safer against hurricanes.
