José de la Luz y Caballero in the history of San Antonio

Ambrosio Valiente Duany, was the son of the cuban patriot and famous lawyer Porfirio Valiente y de las Cuevas. Today, we will speak about this man, almost unknown, who served as Judge of First Instance in San Antonio de los Baños in 1882. Join us.

Born in Santiago de Cuba, on February 13th, 1832, Ambrosio Valiente Duany began his first studies in his hometown and completed in Havana. He was among the founder students of the college ‘’El Salvador’’ of Don José de la Luz y Caballero. He emigrated to the United States, and in New York published ‘’Chronological tables of the History of Cuba’’ in 1853.

He was co-editor of the combat newspaper ‘’El Guao’’. He completed his studies at universities in Spain and Havana, graduating of Bachelor of Law. He was member of the Anthropological Society of Havana and Secretary of the Department of History, Science and Fine Arts of the Economic Society of Santiago de Cuba. He was among the first members of the Spanish Abolitionist Society. Ambrosio Valiente Duany was Head of Masonry of Cuba and the Antilles, and then Head of the Independence Conspiracy in Oriente together with Céspedes, Aguilera and Figueredo.

He was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba in Arms in Peru and Bolivia. He returned to Cuba and devoted himself to the judicial career. In 1882, he was appointed Judge of First Instance of San Antonio.
