When speaking of the Revolution of 1930 in Cuba, we have to mention San Antonio de los Baños. This artemiseña city has the merit of having given birth to the first student martyr in the struggle against Machado, Rafael Trejo González.
Cuban university students suffered the repression of the tyranny of Gerardo Machado Morales. After the demonstrations against the extension of powers of 1927, many student leaders were arrested, some were dead and not a few were in exile. However, the student movement, inspired by the teachings of Julio Antonio Mella, returned to the first row of revolutionary action. In 1930, several clandestine meetings were held at the University of Havana and the University Student Board was constituted to unite forces against the dictatorship.
To demonstrate the feeling of Cuban students a street demonstration would take place on September 30th, 1930, as well as a meeting against the regime's crimes at the University and a demonstration at the house of Professor Enrique José Varona. The outbreak of hostilities against tyranny and the launch of a manifesto to the people would complete the actions of that historic day. But in the interception of Infanta and San Lazaro Streets in Havana City, death lurked protesters. An ariguanabense would become the first student martyr in the struggle against Machado.
