The ''vueltabajero'' wise

San Antonio de los Baños was a developing town, in the middle years of the 19th century. The coffee, sugar and tobacco industry had turned Ariguanabo into a prosperous region. In this context, Tranquilino Sandalio de Noda Martinez settled in San Antonio de los Baños in 1839, although he spent some time in Pinar del Rio. He remained there until 1852. The artemiseño intellectual wanted to stay near his house in ‘’La Habana Intramural’’, to comply with his government functions in the capital.

Noda headed the national statistical system for some years. In 1840, the regular meeting of the Patriotic Society of Havana charged him to relate with the organizers of the future patriotic deputations: Cardenas, Cienfuegos and Sagua la Grande; so he proposed the establishment of a patriotic deputation in the western part of the island. Thanks to his efforts, the Economic Society of Guanajay was created. Calcagno emphasized the importance of this life stage due to his contributions and diligent work to achieve the promotion of Vuelta Abajo.

In 1863 Noda Tranquilino Sandalio Martinez was sick and had to go to his house in San Antonio de los Baños. Nevertheless, he wrote for the newspaper ‘’El Labrador’’. He won prestige at the academic world due to his studies on the Ariguanabo Lagoon and the analysis on hygiene and water systems of San Antonio. In 1850, he published on ‘’El Diario ge la Habana’’ several chronicles about this locality.
He taught poor children. Asthma attacks were more frequent and intense, at the same time, pains caused by the gout were irresistible. Thus, he died in San Antonio de los Baños, on May 27th, 1866.

On December 5th, 1899, the old ‘’Paseo de Pérez Capote’’ was named ‘’Paseo de Noda’’. This park became the seawall of Ariguanabo River.
Fifteen years later, Quijano, Lieutenant of the Liberation Army, and Figuerola and Coronado, Director and Secretary, respectively, of the National Library, requested to place a marble plaque on his house. This distinction could not be performed because the house had disappeared.
