LifeSan Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba.- The suicide prevention program is a priority of the Municipal Department of Health in Ariguanabo. From the characterization of the population by the doctor and family nurse, patients and relatives are controlled, so says Hamir García Fernández, Psychiatrist and Director of the Community Center for Mental Health.
He adds that at the health area, doctor and nurse provide support to patients or their families. He also states that risk factors and other conditions that may prevail, such as the indiscriminate consumption of alcohol, medicines and other drugs and criminal behavior, require a specialized evaluation by interdisciplinary teams composed of nurses, therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers who provide assessments and proposals of healthy lifestyles.
Hamir notes that the suicide attempt is a disease that should be notified and is followed up at the health area. The main treatment of patients includes the family care in order to comply with the measures and proposals of life, such as: to put medicines out of reach of patients, observe their behavior and if necessary, their admission.
