Devastating cyclones

HurricaneHurricane Hurricane season in Cuba lasts from June, 1st to November, 30th, although, sometimes weather events appear early. Today in our section, we will approach cyclones that desolated the outskirts of San Antonio de los Baños.

On October, 1844, San Antonio suffered a cyclone named ‘’San Francisco de Asís’’. This cyclone damaged enough to the population, but not as much as ‘’Santa Teresita de Jesús’’, on October, 1846. It destroyed more than two hundred houses and caused many victims. Since then, coffee plantations that abounded in the region began to disappear.

On October, 1865, a major hurricane razed the jurisdiction of San Antonio de los Baños. ''El Parque del Recreo’’, the church, the lighting and lots of houses in the villa felt its effects. In rural areas, the fields were visibly devastated after this hurricane. The Ariguanabo Lagoon flooded the neighboring fields, completely covering the few paths that crossed it. The destruction of the banana and coffee plantations and of the few houses left, reinforced a horrible misery that took possession of the once flourishing ariguanabense countryside.
