San Antonio and ‘’La Guerrita de Agosto’’

As a consequence of the presidential reelection of Tomas Estrada Palma, the Liberal Party took up the arms in 1906. Eager for power, the Liberals triggered what is known in the history of Cuba as ‘’La Guerrita de Agosto’’. This provoked the resignation of the President and the establishment of the Second American Military Occupation, under the command of Charles Magoon which would last until 1909.

The first republican years went by among the enthusiasm of the new era and the enjoyment of the peace gained with the Zanjon Pact. In the sky of the homeland, the coming storms began to glimpse. Fellowship days were followed by passions, resentments and political hatreds. The formerly united brothers found themselves face to face, and an insurrection broke out in August, 1906.

General Carlos Guas, Doctor of the Villa, guided the hosts. They took possession of the City Council. As Mayor Vivanco was liberal, he and other officers were respected in their offices. A few days later, the City Council declared the Doctor out of his office, for having taken up arms against the constituted government.
