The Central Park

Central Park Central Park The Central Park is a distinguishing seal of local heritage. The central park area belonged to the property of Doña Barbara Santa Cruz, Marchioness of ‘’Monte Hermoso’’.

In 1782, this lady ordered the construction in these lands of a small chapel and oratory that became ''Plaza de la iglesia''. Two years later, it was an assistant parish church. For this reason, the chapel of the Marchioness disappeared and the area became ''Plaza del Mercado''. Forty years later, it became ''Plaza de Armas'' where soldiers from Spain were trained; so, Plaza del Mercado moved to Plaza Monte Hermoso, where today, ‘’Julio Perez’’ School is located.

In 1849, Lieutenant Governor of the town ordered to put cocó floor to the square, place banks, plant poplars around and put two pillars to close with chains the entries of every street and called it ‘’Plaza del Recreo’’. Some years after the opening of this square, a monument was placed in honor of the Prince of Asturias. It consisted of a column ending in a sphere where it was registered "Queen Elizabeth II and in memory of the Prince of Asturia’s birth.

At the end of the spanish rule, the statue was removed and donated to the museum in Cardenas. Today, it is a center visited by the inhabitants of the Villa and in the evening Ariguanabo youth enjoy at this distinguishing site of our territory.
