San Antonio de los Baños goes on strike

Soon after the assassination of Frank País García a strike wave broke out throughout Cuba. In August, 1957, a strike committee was created in Ariguanabo, with the participation of the July 26th Movement, the Popular Socialist Party and the Authentic.

This diversity allowed to develop an effective unit propaganda at the main work centers of the municipality. Some factories stopped working: Los despalillos, las escogidas, ‘’Banco Garrigó’’, ‘’El Potro’’, ‘’Abono Cacique’’, ‘’Alkázar’’, bus transportation and student centers. Only ‘’Fleishman’’ Factory was working that day. Although the general strike was crushed by the repressive forces, it meant a precedent of unity and demonstrated the strength of the labor movement.

The increase of revolutionary actions in 1958 led to the interruption of electric power in San Antonio de los Baños and to the destruction of the electric Sub-plant of Ceiba del Agua. In the vicinity of the church a bomb exploded and the railway line was sabotaged. Several houses belonging to the Tobacco Factory were set on fire. On account of the pain for the vile murder of Frank País, the ariguanabenses, as well as whole the country, went on a strike that marked a turning point for the final victory.
