International Tobacco Research Institute, an outstanding center

Tobacco InstituteTobacco InstituteSan Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba.- San Antonio de los Baños has several research centers; one of the most outstanding is the Tobacco Research Institute. During its 30 years of created, it has contributed to the development of cuban science. The institution makes valuable contributions to the cultivation of tobacco in Cuba as the creation of more than 16 tobacco cultivars, resistant to major pests and diseases.

The center has the official record of 266 scientific results, 42 direct introductions to the production and 15 economic achievements, from 1991 to 2014. Between 1993 and 1996, they have received the National Vanguard Condition given by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, due to scientific results obtained: two new varieties of Black tobacco, resistant to blue mold and new varieties of "Burley Habana 13 " and "Virginia San Luis 20".

Besides, 11 ‘’MINAG’’ awards, 2 awards given by the Cuban Science Academy in collaboration with the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and 17 ‘’CITMA’’ awards. At provincial forums, they have obtained 40 relevant awards and 30 outstanding prizes. At National Forums, 5 relevant awards. The institution as well as some researchers have received the Seal ‘’Forjadores del futuro’’on several occasions. Gilberto Torrecilla, Miguel Espino and Abdón Eumelio Joaquín Trémols received the Order ‘’Carlos J Finlay’’, and the Annual Recognition to the Scientific Personality was given to Eumelio Miguel Espino.
