''Who always loses'' was the title of a documentary made by the colleague Julia Osendi to refer to them and their performance in our National Baseball Series. I take it as a reference because their work is rarely recognized. Their mission is to go out to the diamonds accompanied by the usual hiss and the most unimaginable insults shouted by fans. Justice in every sphere of life is always difficult, but in baseball it is more embarrassing.
The history of arbitration in Cuba is rich. Many figures have left marks on their way through the Cuban and international diamonds like Amado Maestri, Agapito Mayor, Alfredo Paz, Nelson Diaz, Omar Lucero, Luis Cesar Valdes and Jorge Luis Perez. They are remembered for their knowledge, integrity, discipline in the field, authority, ethics and presence to dress in umpires. Social equity in our country has led women to exercise many tasks including in sport. Yanet Moreno is the only woman that works as umpire in our National Series, but Yanet Moreno is just one. Although in our province there are several females engaged in this task, we are still very far from achieving the quality needed. Today Artemisa has difficulties to exercise with dignity the work of their umpires. Only two represent the province at the National Baseball Series: Roberto Hernandez and Alex Piquero.
"Everything is guaranteed." "We have no problems with the umpires". These phrases are repeated in all technical congresses taking place in the province, but when we go to the field, reality is very far from what is proposed. It's time to work tirelessly in search of quality. The sports event should be respected. In Artemisa, we have found umpires without proper ethical to perform these functions, and most painful, with preferences towards the home club team. It is true that courses are offered, but this is not enough, because they are done in a very short time. Conformity is not the solution. The stimulus is necessary and while they receive the paltry salary of 10 pesos and 91 cents, a few will practice this profession. The umpires can be stimulated in many ways, not with the traditional diploma and public merit, but with several alternatives, then the fruit of the work will be rewarded otherwise . At least that's my opinion.
